Sylvia Tyler
It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our Deputy Chairman and Membership Secretary Sylvia Tyler.

Sylvia
Sylvia Tyler with Mara Galeazzi at the Ballet Association dinner in 2013

Sylvia was a founder member of the Association some 41 years ago, along with her husband Shane who was our first Chairman. Sylvia died on 12 February after a short illness. Fellow founder member Joan Seaman writes, “There will be many tributes in glowing terms about the great work Sylvia did for ballet and the Ballet Association in particular. My loss is a personal one. We were very close since the 70s, sharing our joys and sorrows and I shall miss her so much. We are left with an enduring memory of a fine lady.”

We will miss her greatly. Our thoughts are with Shane and their family.

Vadim Muntagirov to join The Royal Ballet
(ROH press release)

Vadim Muntagirov will join The Royal Ballet as a Principal dancer on 24 February 2014.

Kevin O’Hare, Director of The Royal Ballet said ‘I was delighted when Vadim approached me about the possibility of joining The Royal Ballet. Since graduating from The Royal Ballet School he has made a huge impact during his career with English National Ballet and I very much look forward to him joining our wonderful roster of male Principals.’

Vadim said: ‘This is a very exciting time for me. I have had so many fantastic opportunities with English National Ballet over the past four years and have many great memories to take with me. At this point in my career I feel ready to take on new challenges and felt that The Royal Ballet could offer me that opportunity.

‘To dance some of the great roles in The Royal Ballet’s repertory as well as create new work being made by some of the greatest choreographers is a dream come true.’

Vadim’s first performance for The Royal Ballet will be on Tuesday 25 March in The Sleeping Beauty partnering Akane Takada. He will also appear in Christopher Wheeldon’s new full-length ballet The Winter’s Tale which opens in April.

Twenty-three-year-old Vadim is currently a Lead Principal with English National Ballet. Born in Chelyabinsk, Russia, Vadim began dancing in 1999 attending the Perm Choreographic Ballet Institute. In 2006 he won the silver medal at the Prix de Lausanne and in the same year was invited to join The Royal Ballet Upper School. Upon graduation in 2009, he joined English National Ballet. In 2013 Vadim was awarded the Benois de la Danse.

Steven McRae awarded Young Australian Achiever of the Year in the UK
(Press release)

Marking Australia Day abroad has taken on an extra special meaning for Royal Ballet Principal Steven McRae, who has been named Young Australian Achiever in the UK 2014 by the Australia Day Foundation.

The 28 year-old’s dream career run has taken him from his first jazz and tap classes as a child to tapping at the Sydney Olympics, becoming the Royal Ballet’s youngest Principal dancer and performing as guest Principal with renowned international ballet companies. Steven’s remarkable story has evoked comparisons to the fictional dancer, Billy Elliot. Steven grew up on the drag racing circuits of Western Sydney where his family competed professionally. He soon realised he was destined to star on stage rather than on the track after his sister took him to an impromptu dance class when he was just seven years old.

Not content to simply revel in his own success, Steven is instead using his journey of hard work, passion and determination to inspire children to chase their own dreams through a co-created Manga Ballet Hero fantasy series, which is gearing up for worldwide release. The illustrated stories feature dance characters including Steven himself, and he hopes along with providing inspiration they’ll help to change the public perception of ballet and dance in general.

The Australia Day Foundation accolade is especially significant for Steven this year, as he will be performing his favourite role of Romeo with the Queensland Ballet in July. It’s a return to what was his treasured first Principal role in a full length ballet.

Steven said: “I am honoured to be receiving this award and delighted to be recognised for my work by my home country. I am proud to represent Australia in everything that I do, and I look forward to sharing much of what I have learnt and experienced abroad with everyone in Australia in the future.”

Australia Day Foundation Director, Dick Porter said: “The Australia Day Foundation is thrilled to give Steven this award - for someone of his age to have achieved so much and represented Australia on the world stage is truly remarkable and an inspiration to young people everywhere.”

… awards were presented by the Australian High Commissioner the Honourable Mike Rann in front of a packed audience at Australia House.

Introduced by the non-profit Australia Day Foundation, the UK Australia Day Awards provide everyone with the opportunity to recognise those Australians who excel in their fields in the United Kingdom.

Members of The Royal Ballet, including Principals Edward Watson, Lauren Cuthbertson, Sarah Lamb and Rupert Pennefather, will be performing at a unique gala evening on Sunday 2 Feb in aid of Ghanaian charity Ashanti Development.

In the intimate, elegant surroundings of the Royal College of Music’s 400 seat Britten Theatre, more than fifteen of the Company’s world-class dancers will perform highlights from a wide range of ballets, both classical and modern. The programme will also feature two world premieres, created especially for the evening, by Royal Ballet dancers Ludovic Ondiviela and Valentino Zucchetti. Other works already confirmed for the event include extracts from ballets by Frederick Ashton, Wayne McGregor, Christopher Wheeldon, Liam Scarlett and Arthur Pita.

All proceeds will go towards providing remote villages in the Ashanti region of Ghana with water and sanitation, healthcare, education and income generating activities. Since starting work in its first village Gyetiase over eight years ago, Ashanti has worked with more than thirty villages in the area, to fight poverty and strengthen communities.
